Self-Regulation Strategies for Parents of Neurodivergent Children

Introduction

Parenting a neurodivergent child can often be a unique and rewarding journey, but it comes with its own set of challenges that can be both overwhelming and exhausting for some parents. While many neurodivergent children tend to learn about self-regulation strategies through therapy or school, it is just as important for parents/caregivers to have their own support systems in place. Parenting can be tough, even under the best circumstances, and managing intense emotions and stress is an essential part of this journey. To help you navigate these challenges, we have put together a few practical and easy-to-implement self-regulation strategies designed to support you when emotions run high.

Parenting neurodivergent children

Parenting a neurodivergent child can be incredibly fulfilling, but it also entails facing experiences that those around you might not fully understand. There may be times when you feel misunderstood, confused, or overwhelmed by exhaustion due to various factors. One of the more challenging aspects can be witnessing your child’s intense emotions and behaviors without knowing the best way to help. Sometimes, this can make parents feel helpless and stressed, especially when these outbursts occur frequently and unexpectedly. Additionally, the constant anticipation of potential triggers for your child’s big emotions and behaviors may keep you on high alert, adding another layer of stress. Managing the day-to-day aspects of your child’s needs can also feel stress-inducing. Some of these tasks may require extra attention and vigilance, contributing to an overall sense of exhaustion. As a result, parents of neurodivergent children may experience a wide range of emotions, including shame, guilt, confusion, inadequacy, sadness, and even feelings of being overwhelmed. All of these emotions are completely valid, but can sometimes create a negative loop that feels difficult to break.

What is self-regulation?

Self-regulation can be a helpful tool for parents of neurodivergent children as it involves managing one’s emotions and impulses, which is important for maintaining their overall mental and physical well-being. It is a skill that allows you to apply conscious thought to events that might trigger strong negative emotions. When we experience strong feelings like frustration, anxiety, or anger, our bodies respond with physical changes such as increased heart rate, higher blood pressure, and faster breathing. By practicing self-regulation more consistently, you can learn to stay calm and in control during stressful situations, helping to mitigate both emotional and physical responses.

Mindfulness: Background and recommended techniques

Mindfulness can be particularly beneficial for parents wanting to learn how to self-regulate. It involves being fully aware of your current thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. A key component of mindfulness is acceptance. Acceptance involves acknowledging your emotions as they are without trying to change them. This might seem counterintuitive, but accepting your feelings as they are can significantly reduce the stress of constantly trying to fix them. Instead of focusing solely on negative emotions, mindfulness encourages you to recognize and appreciate positive moments as well. Another important component of mindfulness is self-observation. By observing your experiences without judgment, you are training your brain to better understand your emotions and how they affect you. Think of this as a research project where you collect data without evaluation, simply noticing what you feel and experience.

Several quick and easy-to-implement mindfulness techniques can help you self-regulate in stressful moments. Deep breathing, for example, is closely related to brain function. Slow, deep breaths signal your brain to calm down, which in turn relaxes your body. Practicing positive affirmations can also be effective. While it may feel odd to repeat positive phrases during stressful times, affirmations like “calm,” “love,” and “patience” can replace negative thoughts with positive ones, helping to soothe both your mind and body. Practicing self-compassion is another useful technique. When you are feeling stressed, take a moment to acknowledge your feelings and their intensity on a scale of 1 to 10. Remind yourself that everyone experiences these emotions from time to time and that it is okay to feel this way. You could also imagine advising another parent in your situation and offer yourself the same compassion. Continue this process until your stress level decreases to a more manageable level.

Other self-regulation strategies

Besides mindfulness techniques, there are other strategies that can help you self-regulate effectively. Intentional yawning, for instance, can be surprisingly beneficial. Research suggests that yawning helps cool the brain and can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.

Another technique is the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise, which involves using your senses to focus on the present moment. With this technique, identify five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. Doing so shifts your focus from anxious thoughts to the present moment.

Self-massage is also a simple yet effective way to manage stress. Actions like giving yourself a hug, massaging the web between your thumb and index finger, or running your fingers through your scalp can bring immediate relief. These techniques not only help you reconnect with your body but also stimulate brain function, consciously moving you away from negative thoughts.

Visual aids

If the suggested mental and physical techniques are challenging for you, visual aids can also support mindfulness and self-regulation. Techniques such as figure 8 breathing and flower and candle breathing can help provide structure to your breathing practice. You may print these visuals and place them where you are most likely to see them when stressed (e.g., on the fridge). These visual aids can help guide your breathing and maintain a steady pace, providing similar calming effects as other mindfulness techniques discussed above.

Key considerations when using self-regulation strategies

It is important to remember that practicing self-regulation strategies more consistently will make them feel more natural and easier over time. Moreover, every parent is unique, so it is important to stick with what works best for you. If these strategies do not seem to be effective for you, do not hesitate to seek additional support, such as joining parent support groups or seeking therapy. Above all, remember that you are doing the best you can. Parenting a neurodivergent child is a challenging but incredibly important role, and your efforts make a significant difference to your child’s life. Take care of yourself, practice self-compassion, and know that you are not alone on this journey.
